What is a Bankart Repair?

A Bankart repair is a surgical procedure where the surgeon reattaches torn cartilage (the labrum) to the rim of the shoulder socket. The primary objective of this surgery is to restore stability to the shoulder joint, alleviate pain, and ensure the patient maintains a healthy range of motion.

Who Should Have a Bankart Repair?

This procedure is typically recommended for individuals suffering from recurrent shoulder dislocations (where the ball pops out of the socket) or chronic shoulder instability. While some Bankart lesions may heal on their own, they often do not heal in a way that restores full joint functionality. Consequently, you and your healthcare provider may decide to pursue surgical intervention if conservative treatments—such as medication, rest, and physical therapy—have failed to resolve your symptoms.

How Well Does a Bankart Repair Work?

Many studies report successful shoulder stabilization in approximately 80% to 95% of patients, particularly when surgery is performed before significant bone loss or repeated dislocations occur. Younger athletes and individuals participating in contact sports may have a higher risk of recurrent instability, but modern arthroscopic techniques continue to produce excellent long-term outcomes

What Can I Expect When I Have a Bankart Repair?

Prior to surgery, you may be required to complete a pre-surgical physical exam so your medical team can make any necessary adjustments based on your health history. Upon arriving at the facility, you will consult with your surgeon and anesthesiologist; in most cases, this procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the complexity of the repair, your pain tolerance, and the level of support you have at home, you may be discharged the same day or require an overnight stay.

Most patients can return to basic daily activities, once they are no longer taking prescription pain medications—typically within one to two weeks. You will attend a follow-up appointment approximately 1–2 weeks after surgery for a check-up on the surgical repair. Depending on your surgeon’s specific protocol, you will be required to wear a sling for four to six weeks, while starting a physical therapy program.

Please note that strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided until you have reached full recovery, which generally takes four months.
