What is a Rotator Cuff Repair?

Rotator cuff repair is a surgical procedure used to fix damage to some or all of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff in the shoulder. The primary goals of this surgery are to alleviate pain and restore the shoulder’s ability to function properly, particularly with doing overhead lifting type activities. Depending on the injury, these tears can be classified as either partial or complete. Because the rotator cuff is essential for keeping the shoulder joint strong, stable and secure in its socket, repairing a tear is often necessary for long-term mobility and strength.

Who Should Have a Rotator Cuff Repair?

It is common for patients to want to explore every non-surgical option before considering an operation. Conservative treatments typically include a combination of rest, medications, steroid injections, and physical therapy. While these methods are often effective at managing pain, they generally cannot restore the actual strength of the shoulder if a tear is present. Some people can accept those limitations, but some cannot.

Because of this, many individuals eventually find that surgery is a better alternative than continuing to live with the limitations of a weakened shoulder. Additionally, high-level athletes frequently opt for surgical repair to ensure they can return to their sport and perform at a competitive level.

How Well Does a Rotator Cuff Repair Work?

When the procedure is performed by an experienced orthopedic surgeon, many patients see significant results. Most people experience a substantial reduction in pain and a noticeable increase in shoulder strength following the repair.

What Can I Expect When I Have a Rotator Cuff Repair?

Your surgeon will work with you to determine the most effective surgical approach for your specific injury, which may include an open repair, a mini-open repair, or arthroscopic surgery (using a scope). Depending on the method chosen and your overall health status, your anesthesia requirements and whether you need an overnight hospital stay will vary.

In some cases, you may be required to undergo a pre-surgical physical examination so that your care team can make any necessary adjustments based on your medical history. On the day of the procedure, you will meet with your surgeon and anesthesiologist before the operation begins.

Following surgery, our team at Fox Valley Orthopedics will provide you with a home exercise plan to support your initial recovery. You will then transition into a formal physical therapy program, which typically begins anywhere from one day to a few weeks after the procedure. Your commitment to this rehabilitation program is the most critical factor in how quickly and successfully you recover.

While many patients achieve full recovery—meaning they are pain-free with a complete range of motion—in about six months, those with more extensive tears may find that the process takes closer to a year.
