What is a Shoulder Replacement?

A shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure where a surgeon replaces the damaged parts of the shoulder joint. The ball at the top of the arm bone is replaced with a metal one, and the socket is replaced with a plastic component. This helps relieve pain and restore movement.

Who Should have a Shoulder Replacement?

Potential candidates for shoulder replacement surgery often suffer from:

• Loss of motion or strength in the shoulder
• Severe pain that limits everyday activities
• Moderate to severe pain while sleeping

How Well Does a Shoulder Replacement Work?

Shoulder replacement is nearly always successful at achieving the main goal of relieving the pain associated with shoulder movement. It is an open surgery and has the same risks as all open surgeries, which your surgeon will discuss with you.

What Can I Expect When I Have a Shoulder Replacement?

Before surgery, you may need a pre-operative physical exam to identify any health considerations and make appropriate accommodations. On the day of your procedure, you will meet with both your surgeon and anesthesiologist. Most patients receive general or regional anethesia, meaning you will be fully asleep during surgery. A hospital stay of one to two days is typically required.

Following surgery, you may need help with daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, and driving during the initial recovery period. Most patients can resume many normal activities within one to two weeks, once they are no longer taking prescription pain medication. Stitches or staples are usually removed at a follow-up appointment about two weeks after surgery. You will also need to wear a sling for two to four weeks and closely follow your at-home exercise program and physical therapy plan. Gentle activities may be possible after two to 6 weeks for some patients.

Recovery timelines vary based on the individual, but regaining full range of motion and achieving minimal or no pain generally takes about six months. For some patients, complete recovery may take closer to a year.
