Morton’s Neuroma
Also Known As: Interdigital Neuroma, Intermetatarsal Neuroma, Morton’s Metatarsalgia, Forefoot Neuroma
What is Morton’s Neuroma?
Although the term “neuroma” may sound like a tumor, Morton’s Neuroma is actually a benign condition. It occurs when the nerve in the foot becomes irritated or compressed due to trauma or excessive pressure. This inflammation often results in burning sensations or radiating pain that extends into the toes.
What Causes Morton’s Neuroma?
While the precise cause isn’t always clear, this condition typically stems from nerve entrapment. When the nerve located in the web space (the area between your toes) is consistently compressed, it can lead to abnormal tissue growth, swelling, and general irritation.
Several factors may increase your risk of developing Morton’s Neuroma:
- Wearing narrow or tight-fitting shoes that squeeze the toes together
- Frequent use of high heels, which shift weight forward into a “push-off” position
- Repeated pressure or trauma to the front part of the foot (forefoot)
What are Morton’s Neuroma Symptoms?
Those suffering from Morton’s Neuroma frequently report the following symptoms:
- Sharp or burning pain in the ball of the foot, which may travel into the toes
- A tingling sensation or numbness in the affected area
- The distinct feeling that a marble or pebble is lodged under the forefoot
- Increased discomfort when walking, running, going barefoot, or wearing restrictive footwear
While these symptoms can occur anywhere in the forefoot, they are most common between the third and fourth toes, though they occasionally affect the second and third.
How Is Morton’s Neuroma Treated?
Many patients find significant relief through conservative, non-surgical methods. Depending on the severity of the condition, your provider may suggest:
- Modifying your footwear to allow more room for the toes
- Utilizing custom or over-the-counter orthotics
- Targeted injections to reduce inflammation
- Anti-inflammatory medications to manage pain
In cases where conservative treatments do not provide sufficient relief, an orthopedic specialist may recommend a surgical procedure to remove the inflamed nerve tissue.
