Scoliosis Treatment in Illinois

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. While it can occur at any age, scoliosis is most commonly diagnosed during childhood or adolescence. The severity of scoliosis varies widely, with some cases requiring only observation and others needing more comprehensive treatment.
Scoliosis can be classified into different types based on its cause. Treated here at Fox Valley Orthopedics:

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis: The most common type, with no identifiable cause. There may be a genetic component if there is a family history.
  • Degenerative Scoliosis: Develops in adults due to aging and spinal degeneration.

Signs of Scoliosis

  • Uneven shoulders or shoulder blades
  • A noticeable curve in the spine
  • Uneven waist or hips
  • Leaning to one side

Diagnosing Scoliosis

In a scoliosis evaluation, medical professionals perform a thorough physical examination and review the patient’s medical and family history. The most precise way to view the scoliosis if present is with an X-ray, which can be completed at the time of your visit. During the physical exam, the patient may be asked to bend forward so the doctor can check for unevenness in the ribs or spine, and use a scoliometer to assess the curvature. This device also allows the doctor to follow the curve without more x-rays. Additional diagnostic methods include:

  • X-ray: A long x-ray is taken to view the whole spine in one picture. This provides a detailed image of the spine to determine the severity and location of the curve.
  • MRI: This is usually not needed early on unless the doctor notes an abnormal reflex on exam. Additional uses for MRI are pre-surgical planning, or severe pain.
  • CT Scan: Offers cross-sectional images of the spine for detailed bony evaluation.

Scoliosis Treatment Options

The treatment for scoliosis depends on the patient’s age, the severity of the curve, and the likelihood of progression. Treatment options include both non-surgical and surgical approaches.

Conservative Care

  • Observation: For mild cases, doctors may recommend periodic checkups to monitor the curve.
  • Bracing: A back brace may be prescribed to prevent the progression of the spinal curve in growing children and adolescents. It is not indicated in young adults who have reached skeletal maturity or adults.
  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to improve posture, strengthen muscles, and enhance flexibility can be beneficial. Schroth PT is dedicated physical therapy performed by a specialist for scoliosis-specific exercises.
  • Medications: Over-the-counter medications, such as NSAIDs, can help alleviate discomfort. Topical creams and patches may be used for local relief.
  • Yoga and Pilates: These practices can help improve posture and flexibility, reducing discomfort.

Scoliosis Surgery

Surgery is typically recommended for severe cases of scoliosis s or is causing significant symptoms. This is well planned out with your surgeon and team.

  • Spinal Fusion: The most common procedure, where two or more vertebrae are permanently joined to correct and stabilize the spine.
