Everyday Habits that Cause Back Pain

While many aches and pains can be ignored, back pain is a common occurrence that can get in the way of your day-to-day activities. In fact, according to the American Chiropractic Association, about 80% of Americans experience back pain at some point in their lives.
While injuries and accidents are a common cause for spinal discomfort, there are a host of bad habits that may be wreaking havoc on your spine without even realizing it.
Slouching
While slouching may not be the most visually appealing, it can also be the cause of your upper or lower back pain. When you’re sitting, standing, or performing day-to-day activities, your posture plays an important role. When you maintain proper posture, your spine is in alignment, and you can effectively prevent back pain and even potential injuries.
Wearing High Heels
Though a pair of heels may be your favorite accessory to complete your outfit, they may be causing more than aches and pains to your feet. When you wear heels that are tall enough, they can cause you to walk on the balls of your feet. This shift in your center of gravity changes the way you walk and hold your posture, resulting in a more arched spine and additional tension in your back.
Carrying Heavy Bags
If you find yourself frequently experiencing shoulder, neck, and back pain at the end of your day—your purse may be the culprit. When you carry an excessively heavy bag on your shoulder, you can cause the muscles in your shoulder and back to become overstretched. If you carry a purse, be sure to alternate shoulders to avoid this issue.
It is also important not to overload your bag. It is recommended that your bag shouldn’t exceed 10% of your body weight. For example, if you weigh 120 lbs, your bag shouldn’t be heavier than 12 lbs.
Sedentary Behavior
Taking some time to relax can be good for your body in moderation. However, when you spend prolonged periods of time sitting or lying down, your back can become stiff and weak over time. By getting regular exercise and moving about throughout your day, you can help to keep your back muscles conditioned and prevent unnecessary pain.
