Microdiscectomy
What is a Microdiscectomy?
A microdiscectomy is a surgical technique that removes the herniated discs, disc extrusion, thereby reducing pressure on the compressed nerve and therefore easing pain. This procedure is performed in the lumbar region, which refers to the lower portion of your spine.
Who Should Have a Microdiscectomy?
The surgical team at Fox Valley Orthopedics may recommend a microdiscectomy for patients suffering from herniated discs in the lumbar (lower back) region. This option is generally considered when more conservative treatment strategies—such as medication, steroid injections, or physical therapy, or injections—have failed to provide adequate pain relief or improve the patient’s quality of life.
How Well Does Microdiscectomy Work?
Generally, clinical research indicates that a microdiscectomy provides significant pain relief. While it is highly effective, patients should be aware that there is always a risk that pain could return due to a recurrent disc herniation.
What Can I Expect When I Have a Microdiscectomy?
Before your procedure, you will be required to undergo a pre-surgical physical exam with your primary care doctor so your care team can make any necessary adjustments based on your medical history. Upon arriving at the surgical center, you will meet with your anesthesiologist and surgeon. For the operation, you will be placed under general anesthesia (put to sleep) and positioned face down.
This is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will not stay overnight in the hospital; however, it is required that you have a designated driver to take you home.
Your exercise routine during recovery will depend on your individual tolerance, but it is important that progress is slow and carefully monitored. We strongly encourage walking to maintain mobility in your legs and back, as this helps minimize the formation of scar tissue. In the early stages of recovery, sitting may be uncomfortable; we recommend limiting sitting sessions to less than 20 minutes at a time, though this will improve as you heal. To further support your recovery, physical therapy may be prescribed.
Regarding a return to work, office-based employees typically require 2 to 4 weeks of recovery. Those in occupations that involve strenuous activity or heavy lifting generally need between 4 and 8 weeks before returning to work.
