Hammertoe Surgery
What Is Hammertoe Surgery?
Hammertoe surgery is a procedure performed to correct a toe that has become permanently bent at one or more joints. The condition most often affects the second, third, or fourth toe and can cause pain, pressure, corns, calluses, and difficulty wearing shoes comfortably.
The goal of surgery is to straighten the toe, relieve pain, improve function, and restore proper alignment. Depending on the severity of the deformity, the procedure may involve releasing or transferring tendons, removing a small portion of bone, reconstructing the joint, or fusing the joint into a corrected position.
Who Should Have Hammertoe Surgery?
Fox Valley Orthopedics may recommend hammertoe surgery for patients whose symptoms persist despite conservative treatment.
You may be a candidate for surgery if you experience:
- Persistent toe pain
- Difficulty walking comfortably
- Problems wearing shoes
- A rigid hammertoe deformity
- Recurring corns or calluses
- Progressive toe deformity
- Pain that limits work, exercise, or daily activities
Most patients first attempt nonsurgical treatment such as:
- Wider footwear
- Toe pads or cushions
- Orthotics
- Splints or straps
- Stretching exercises
- Activity modification
- Anti-inflammatory medications
Before recommending surgery, your orthopedic foot and ankle specialist will perform a thorough examination and obtain X-rays to evaluate the severity of the deformity and determine the most appropriate surgical approach.
How Well Does Hammertoe Surgery Work?
Living with a painful hammertoe can make walking, exercising, and even wearing regular shoes difficult. When conservative treatment is no longer effective, hammertoe surgery is often highly successful at improving toe alignment and reducing pain.
Most patients experience:
- Significant pain relief
- Improved toe position
- Reduced pressure and irritation
- Better shoe comfort
- Improved walking ability
- Greater participation in daily activities
Long-term outcomes are often excellent when patients follow postoperative instructions and complete their recommended rehabilitation program.
What Can I Expect When I Have Hammertoe Surgery?
Prior to surgery, your physician will review your symptoms, health history, X-rays, and treatment goals. You may undergo a preoperative evaluation to ensure you are medically prepared for the procedure.
On the day of surgery, you will meet with your surgeon and anesthesia team. The procedure is commonly performed using local anesthesia with sedation, although other anesthesia options may be appropriate depending on the procedure and patient preference.
During surgery, your surgeon may:
- Release or lengthen tight tendons
- Transfer tendons to improve toe alignment
- Remove a small portion of bone
- Realign the toe joint
- Fuse the joint into a straighter position
- Correct associated foot deformities if necessary
Most hammertoe procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.
Following surgery, recovery may include:
- Use of a surgical shoe or walking boot
- Temporary activity restrictions
- Elevation and swelling management
- Limited weight-bearing based on the procedure performed
- Toe exercises and rehabilitation
- Follow-up appointments to monitor healing
Typical Time Away From Work
Office/Sedentary Roles: Typically 1 to 3 weeks
Moderately Active Roles: Typically 3 to 6 weeks
Strenuous/Physical Roles (standing, walking, lifting): Typically 6 to 10 weeks
Recovery timelines vary depending on the severity of the deformity, the procedure performed, and individual healing rates. Your Fox Valley Orthopedics specialist will provide personalized guidance regarding activity progression and return-to-work expectations.
